Are we fixing the problem, or paying for it later?
What the media told New Zealand about climate change and nature: where the country stands, what is being fixed, what is not, and how each party’s policies measure up
We analysed 88,231 political headlines from June 2023 to October 2026 and found 7,340 about climate or nature, from 167 outlets. The coverage made the bills visible: flood damage, carbon prices, power prices, mining jobs and fishing rules. What it rarely showed was the trend underneath. Emissions are falling too slowly to meet later targets, almost all public money for natural hazards still goes on cleaning up rather than preparing, and most of New Zealand’s native reptiles, frogs, birds and freshwater fish are threatened or at risk of extinction. That last fact barely made the news.
